The Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition was held by the University of Queensland to celebrate the 58th National Day of the People's Republic of China. The Chinese National Anthem was played before Mr. Ren Gongping, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Brisbane declared the opening of the exhibition and made a speech at the opening ceremony on October 1. Mr. John Hay, Vice Chancellor of the University of Queensland congratulated the Chinese National Day and hoped to further strengthen the close relationship between University of Queensland and Chinese Universities. Chancellor Llew Edwards, Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor Paul Greenfield and two other Deputy Vice Chancellors from University of Queensland and Senator Ron Boswell were also present. In its 3000-year history, calligraphy has had close ties to the literature and ethos of the Chinese. Calligraphers devoted their talent to the teaching of philosophy and morality, immortalising warriors and kings, spreading the gospels of Taoists and Buddha, praising and worshipping the beauty of nature and, above all, transforming the written form as a visual art in itself. The Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition is presented by the renowned scholar and calligrapher, the late Mr Lo Yat Ngam, his senior student and devoted disciple of 35 years Mr Wong Kwok Hing, and Dr Nat Yuen, who also studied with Mr Lo. Mr Lo had planned to attend the exhibition. But sadly he passed away on 24 April 2007. |
