2021/03/01

Hon. Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier of Queensland, Minister for Trade,

Hon. Leanne Linard, Minister for Children and Youth Justice and Minister for Multicultural Affairs,

Members of the Cabinet, Members of the Parliament,

Representatives from Chinese Community,

Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends,

Good evening!

First of all, I would like to thank the Hon. Premier and Queensland government for hosting this reception at the beginning of the Chinese New Year. On behalf of the Chinese Consulate General in Brisbane, I wish to take this opportunity to convey our festive greetings and best wishes.

I can still remember a year ago when COVID-19 broke out, the Hon. Premier and all circles of Queensland have shown the sympathy to Chinese people and support to China's fight against COVID-19. Today, thanks to the strong leadership of the Premier and joint efforts of Queensland government and all sectors of society, Queensland has achieved notable results in the pandemic prevention and control. Thus we can gather for a celebration of Chinese New Year and catching up with our friends.

Dear friends,

The year 2020 has been extraordinary. In the face of the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 and a complex external environment, the Chinese government and people have been making concerted and all-out efforts in the fight against pandemic. China is among the first to bring COVID-19 under control as well as to restore daily life and work back to normalcy, becoming the only major economy in the world that has achieved positive economic growth. China has achieved decisive victory in the battle against poverty, and made historic achievements in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects. At the same time, China actively carried out international health cooperation, making important contributions to the global response to COVID-19.

The year 2021 kicks off efforts to implement the 14th Five-Year Plan and starts a new journey toward building a modern socialist country in an all-round way. China will accelerate efforts to foster a new development paradigm with domestic circulation as the mainstay and domestic and international circulations reinforcing each other. China will deepen reform, expand high-level opening-up and give further impetus to global economic recovery and growth. China's cumulative import of goods is expected to exceed US$ 22 trillion in 10 years, which will bring vast market opportunities to business around the world including Queensland.

Dear friends,

With the joint efforts of both sides, China-Queensland relations have maintained healthy and stable development. China remains Queensland's largest trading partner. Since the outbreak of pandemic, China and Queensland have sympathized with and supported each other. In the new year, the Consulate-General looks forward to joining hands with Queensland government and all circles of Queensland to promote pragmatic cooperation and friendship.

Overseas Chinese in Queensland have made important contributions to the development of the local economy, society and multiculturalism, serving as a bridge and bond between China and Queensland. In the most difficult time of fighting against the pandemic, we were touched by the support and assistance provided by the vast numbers of overseas Chinese. After the outbreak in Queensland, everyone stood together through thick and thin, actively participated in and supported the local fight against the pandemic, demonstrating the good character of the Chinese community. The steady growth of China-Queensland relations could not have been possible without the strong support and active participation from all of you here. I'd like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to you all.

According to Chinese tradition, the Spring Festival will not end until the day after tomorrow, which is the 15th of the first month of the Chinese Lunar New Year. I'd like to send my new year wishes again. May the friendship between China and Australia, China and Queensland, last forever! I wish you and your family healthy and happy. Happy New Year of the Ox!

Thank you all.
