Ladies and gentlemen, Good evening!
It is a great pleasure to gather with you to celebrate the 2020 Chinese Lunar New Year. The Spring Festival is a time for us to reflect on the past and look toward into the future, is an occasion for family reunion and for friends get-together. At this joyful moment of bidding farewell to the old and ushering in the new, I would like to, on behalf of the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China, as well as in my own name, express my best wishes and greetings to you all.
Ladies and gentlemen,
2019 is a remarkable year. We celebrated the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Over the past 70 years, under the leadership of Communist Party of China, people of all ethnic groups in the country have worked together and made great achievements in economic, social and cultural undertakings, attracting worldwide attention. At home or abroad, we all personally felt the enormous changes that have taken place in new China. As Chinese people, we all have deep sense of happiness, achievement and pride.
2019 is a year of sheer endeavors and brilliant achievements. China's economy is stable and improving, with GDP expected to edge close to 100 trillion yuan (around USD 14.5 trillion). It is inspiring to witness the rapid development of science and technology, the lunar probe Chang'e-4 landing on the far side of the Moon, the commercial application of 5G technology and other achievements. More than 10 million people across the country will be lifted out of poverty, the people's livelihood will continue to improve and the people's life will become better and better.
2019 is a year of forward looking and overall planning. The successful convening of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China made significant arrangements for upholding and improving the socialist system with Chinese characteristics as well as promoting the modernization of the national governance system and capability in the new era, and formulated a series of important measures to deepen reform and expand opening-up, which provided an institutional guarantee for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
2019 is a year to continue embracing the world with open arms. We hosted the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, the Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition, the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations, and the second China International Import Expo, showcasing a civilized, open and inclusive China to the rest of the world.
2020 will be a year of milestone significance. We will eliminate poverty, complete building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, and embark on a new journey to fully build a modern socialist China. Standing at this new historical starting point, China will become more and more open and its road to socialism with Chinese characteristics will be wider and wider. China will continue to provide more opportunities of market, investment and growth for the joint development of all  countries.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The year 2020 will mark the 48th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Australia. A healthy and stable Sino-Australian relationship is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and their peoples, and is also the common aspiration of those who follow and support the friendship of the two sides.
In 2019, China-Queensland relations maintained a good momentum of development. Practical cooperation in economic and trade, science and technology, education and other fields deepened continuously, local exchanges and people-to-people exchanges became more active. In 2019, Shanghai and Queensland celebrated the 30th anniversary of their sister city/state relationship. Delegations of the two sides exchanged visits and renewed their cooperation with new ambitions.
China has been Queensland's largest trading partner for many years in a row. One third of Queensland's goods were exported to China, more than one quarter of its overseas students came from China, and nearly one fifth of its international tourists were Chinese. China-Queensland co-operations have been mutually beneficial and have great potential. We will strengthen the coordination and collaboration, seek shared commitment to development, and continuously improve the pragmatic cooperation to a new height so that China-Queensland friendship could benefit more people from both sides.
Recently, bush fires raged many areas across Australia, including some in Queensland, and people are severely affected. On behalf of the Consulate General, I would like to take this opportunity to extend our deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the people affected. I believe Australian people will overcome the difficulties and rebuild their homes.
Ladies and gentlemen,
For a long time, overseas Chinese and Chinese Australians have been working diligently and devotedly in Queensland. They have made important contributions to local economic, social and multicultural development while caring and supporting their home country. They are bridging the friendly exchanges between China-Australia and China-Queensland. As one feels more homesick on festive occasions, we welcome everyone of you to visit your home country often, meet relatives and friends and exchange blessings. We wish you a prosperous life, a successful career and a happy family wherever you dwell. As always, the Consulate General will continue our efforts to provide you with better services.
Dear friends, 2020 is the Chinese lunar year of Rat. Rat is symbol of diligence, wit and auspiciousness in Chinese culture, I hereon wish all of you and your families a healthy, happy, prosperous new year.
